Swat! Swat! Dwight won't let Pacers pull off a victory
INDIANAPOLIS -- Dwight Howard's idea of blocking shots last season was to see how far and how hard he could send it into the stands, like a beach volleyball player. Now he's serious about winning the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year award.

Howard took his campaign to the Hoosier State on Friday night, adding more converts in leading the Orlando Magic to a 100-98 overtime victory against the stunned Indiana Pacers.

Rashard Lewis hit a game-winning 18-foot baseline jumper with 23.2 seconds left, pushing Orlando's record to 9-3 and its league-leading winning streak to five.

Howard made it possible by showing everyone why he leads the NBA in blocked shots. He prevented the Pacers from winning it in regulation and tying it once in OT with two of his five blocks.

He didn't block Pacers point guard T.J. Ford's 16-foot jumper shot with 1.9 seconds left that could have tied the game, but he leaped toward the rafters to considerably change its flight pattern.

Fans left Conseco Fieldhouse mumbling in awe over Howard. A group of teens implored him to give up his jersey and Basketball shoes as souvenirs, and he happily obliged.

"Superman put on a show tonight," Magic forward/center Tony Battie said.

Howard led the Magic with 24 points and 17 rebounds. Lewis scored 23, fighting through foul trouble and rediscovering his shooting eye (9 of 12). Jameer Nelson hit big shots, finishing with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting and nine assists.

Orlando can win its sixth in a row tonight against the Houston Rockets -- something it didn't do in a 52-30 season last year.

Coach Stan Van Gundy said he challenged Howard before the season to successfully defend his rebounding title and lead the league in blocks, urging him to make the team better by winning the defensive-player award.

"I should have had more blocks last season [175]," Howard said. "Patrick [assistant coach Ewing] got on me about getting more blocks and I really took it to heart."

Howard stuffed forward Troy Murphy's drive to the hoop with two hands with 40.9 seconds left in overtime and the game tied at 98.

He blocked center Rasho Nesterovic's short jumper with 6.2 seconds left in regulation, extending his 6-foot-11 frame to snare a piece of it.

Howard was surprised that two slow-footed Pacers had the ball for clutch plays and dared to challenge him instead of Danny Granger or Ford handling the ball. "That's not what they wanted," Van Gundy said.

"Yeah, I was surprised," Howard said. "Nesterovic, when he played with Toronto, wasn't a big part of the offense. Just glad I got it."

The Magic won their fourth consecutive road game, following a pattern dating to last season.

Like their win last week in Dallas, this one wasn't suitable for framing as the Magic were beaten 53-47 on the boards, including 15-5 in offensive rebounding.

They stole it at the end with some big shots and big stops, overcoming a 17-2 deficit in second-chance points, a sluggish start and hideous shooting (1 of 13) by Hedo Turkoglu.

But that's what good teams tend to do.

"It means a lot that we can win games like this," Nelson said. "But it's no excuse for not getting off to a better start."

The Magic fell behind by 10 early and were down by six after Ford's layup with seven minutes remaining.

Lewis said his winning jumper was designed to go to Howard inside.

"Dwight sets the pick and then goes into the post," Lewis said. "But if the 4-man [power forward] stays with him -- they usually load up on Dwight -- I got an open shot. They did that and Jameer got the ball to me.

"It's a good sign when Dwight is serious about blocking everybody's shot."
