DRAFT PICKS:
Roy Hibbert, C, 7-2, Georgetown -- Drafted by Toronto but will be sent to the Pacers as part of the Jermaine O'Neal trade when it becomes finalized July 9. Hibbert is considered a fundamentally sound big man who is known more for his defense than his offense. He will immediately help the Pacers' horrendous defense. Brandon Rush, G/F, 6-6, Kansas -- Was drafted by Portland at No. 13 but sent to the Pacers for Jerryd Bayless and forward Ike Diogu. Rush can shoot from long distance, he's a good rebounder and can play multiple positions. He'll team with Danny Granger and Mike Dunleavy to give the Pacers a solid three-man rotation at the swingman spot.
BIGGEST NEEDS: The Pacers addressed a lot of needs with two big trades; the next step is to fit the pieces together. One piece that probably doesn't fit, with G T.J. Ford on board, is G Jamaal Tinsley.
FREE AGENT FOCUS: The Pacers aren't scheduled to lose any significant free agents off their roster this summer.
PLAYER NOTES:
--C Roy Hibbert and G/F Brandon Rush signed their contracts July 15.
--President Larry Bird finally said what everybody has been saying for some time now: point guard Jamaal Tinsley's career with the team is likely over.
"We're trying to do some things to see what's out there for Jamaal and hopefully we can get something done," Bird said. "Jamaal's been great for us. Unfortunately, he's been injured from time to time. He's still a great basketball player, but Jimmy's right. We're probably going in a different direction."
The Pacers will possibly look to buy out Tinsley's contract if they can't find a team that's willing to take a player that has dealt with injuries the past few seasons and has three years remaining on his contract.
--Former Pacer Jermaine O'Neal didn't waste any time telling his new team that he needed a fresh start.
O'Neal, who spent eight years with the Pacers, said the past few seasons in Indiana took a toll on him mentally and physically. He's hoping a fresh start will help him regain his All-Star status with the Raptors.
"Ever since the brawl it was all downhill," O'Neal told Toronto reporters. "It really wore me down mentally and mentally is probably the biggest aspect of every day life. You guys can't do the jobs that you do if you're not mentally focused and mentally healthy, and I really wore down over the last two years and really stopped enjoying playing basketball."
--F Josh McRoberts is coming back home. McRoberts was a star at Carmel High School, a suburb of Indianapolis, before going to Duke and eventually being drafted by Portland.
McRoberts, who was traded on draft night to the Pacers, spent his rookie season planted on the bench in Portland. He appeared in just eight games last season. He'll have a chance to earn playing time with the Pacers because the frontcourt is their weakest area.
"He didn't play a lot in the league last year and he's got a ways to go, but I think he's a great addition," Pacers president Larry Bird said. "With the way (coach) Jimmy (O'Brien) practices and plays, he'll have a chance to be in the rotation."
