Indiana Pacers Roster Report 2009-07-25
DRAFT PICKS:

Tyler Hansbrough, F, 6-9, North Carolina (first round) -- Pacers love Hansbrough's energy. He's been described as a young Jeff Foster with a better offensive game. Hansbrough's arrival means the Pacers are more likely to try to trade Foster.

A.J. Price, G, 6-2, Connecticut (second round) -- Price is a long shot to make the team since the Pacers already have two point guards on the roster and could have a third one if they re-sign Jarrett Jack.

PLAYER NEWS:

--G Dahntay Jones has one thing on his mind when he's on the court, and it's not scoring. Jones, who agreed to a four-year deal with the Pacers on July 8, plans to set the tempo for the Pacers defensively.

"I'm very, very competitive and I take (defense) as a personal challenge," Jones said. "I have been taught by the coaches I played for that defense wins championships."

Jones can defend point and shooting guards and small forwards. The Pacers gave up 106.2 points per game, near the bottom in the league last season.

"We're trying to guard people," team president Larry Bird said. "We talked about that right after the season. We know we're going to score points, but on the defensive end, we've got to get better."

--F Josh McRoberts joked that he would have played for the Pacers for free. He won't have to play for his hometown team for free after agreeing to a multi-year deal on July 15. The second year of McRoberts' contract is partially guaranteed. He averaged 2.4 points and 2.2 rebounds in 33 games last season.

"I've wanted to prove myself since I was drafted (in 2007)," McRoberts said. "That's been my main thing. To prove myself and prove people wrong. I want to be able to do that this year."

--F Danny Granger attended Team USA's minicamp in Las Vegas but decided against taking part in it so that he could rest his right knee, which bothered him last season. The Pacers suggested that Granger sit out the camp because they want to avoid him aggravating his knee. The Pacers, who will have a tough time making the playoffs next season, can't afford to have their best player missing any time next season, especially since they're already without G Mike Dunleavy (knee) indefinitely.

MEDICAL WATCH:

--G Mike Dunleavy is out indefinitely after undergoing right knee surgery in March.
