Indiana Pacers Roster Report 2009-05-29

Indiana Pacers Roster Report 2009-05-29
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Forward Danny Granger's numbers said it all. Granger, who averaged 25.8 points a game, became the first player in league history to increase his scoring average by at least five points in three straight seasons. He had 36 games of at least 25 points.

MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER: Point guard T.J. Ford finished third on the team in scoring, but he struggled grasping coach Jim O'Brien's pass-oriented system. Ford's constant pounding of the ball and forced shots led to him being demoted to backup point guard in late March.

FREE AGENT FOCUS: The Pacers have five free agents. Forward Maceo Baston, forward Josh McRoberts, center Rasho Nesterovic and guard Stephen Graham are all unrestricted free agents. Guard Jarrett Jack is restricted. Jack is the most likely to get re-signed. He said wants to remain a Pacer and team president Larry Bird said earlier in the season that their intentions are to re-sign him.

PLAYER NEWS:

--G Jamaal Tinsley will have an arbitration hearing July 27 in New York. The National Basketball Players Association filed a grievance on behalf of Tinsley in February after the Pacers hadn't traded him yet and wouldn't buy out his contract or release him. Tinsley, who has two years remaining on his contract, was barred from the team following the 2007-08 season. He has not played in a game since January 2008. The Pacers will avoid the arbitration hearing if they're able to trade Tinsley before July 27.

--G Travis Diener has yet to decide if he'll exercise his $1.7 million player option for next season. It would be surprising if Diener decided not pick up the option because there's no guarantee he'll earn more money next season. Diener, who was the team's third point guard last season, could be the first point guard off the bench next season if the Pacers aren't able to re-sign restricted free agent Jarrett Jack. Diener averaged 3.7 points and 2.2 assists in 55 games last season.

MEDICAL WATCH:

--G Mike Dunleavy (knee) is expected to be out until at least January 2010 after undergoing surgery to remove a bone spur from his right patellar tendon and then had the tendon repaired in March in Colorado.
