Five thoughts midway through the conference finals

Five thoughts midway through the conference finals
1. Yes, LeBron . We are all witnesses.

2. Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard , all grown up.

3. Things we'll never know: How the Cavs and Lakers would have responded to being down 0-2.

4. The flipside: two more classic seven-game series?

5. Proof that the draft lottery isn't rigged - the Clippers winning.

PINGPONG DRAMA: So it was the Clippers , of all teams, that came away with the No. 1 pick in the lottery last week. Not only did they dust the poor Kings, who have the worst team and arena in the league, but they essentially zipped past the Warriors in their long-running fight at the bottom of the Pacific Division.

WHO'S NO. 1? Clippers coach/GM Mike Dunleavy has already proclaimed that Blake Griffin will be their pick, and there's no doubt that the Oklahoma star is worthy. But it's also known that Dunleavy would trade Baron Davis in a heartbeat, so expect the Clippers to field all offers for Griffin, and possibly come away with Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio in the end.

IT'S MP TIME: We asked Mickael Pietrus recently for his take on the different styles in the two conferences. Here's what the ex-Warrior, who's been earning solid praise for his defense against LeBron James and the Cavs, had to say: "In the West, offensively, you can basically get whatever you want. In the East, it's all about defense. It's more physical. They pay attention to details."

RATINGS BONANZA ... OR BUST? ESPN and TNT are both touting that some of their latest telecasts - Game 7 of the Lakers-Rockets, Games 1 and 2 of the Lakers-Nuggets - have been the highest-rated playoff games ever. So what happens if the dream matchup of Kobe and LeBron in the NBA Finals turns out to be Nuggets-Magic instead?
