76ers-Pacers Preview 2009-02-16

76ers-Pacers Preview 2009-02-16
The Philadelphia 76ers had high hopes for the signing of Elton Brand, but the forward didn't get a chance to earn his third All-Star appearance. Andre Iguodala couldn't have done much more to prove he deserved to represent the Eastern Conference as an All-Star.

Thanks largely to Iguodala's outstanding play, the 76ers are one of the league's hottest teams as they face the Indiana Pacers in their first game since the All-Star break Tuesday night.

Philadelphia (27-24) expected big things from Brand after giving him a five-year, $80 million contract in the offseason. However, Brand managed to play in only 29 games before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery Feb. 9.

While his loss was a blow, the 76ers have done just fine recently. They've won 14 of 18 games - giving them the best record in the NBA since Jan. 6 - and are 18-10 since coach Tony DiLeo took over for the fired Maurice Cheeks.

Three of Philadelphia's last four losses, in fact, came in games in which Brand played.

"We don't have any All-Stars, we don't have any superstars, people would say," Iguodala said. "We just go out there and get it done."

The Sixers are three games over .500 for the first time since opening 3-0 in 2006-07. They're in sixth place in the East, 3 1/2 games behind fourth-place Atlanta.

"Once we step on the court against other teams, they'll realize we're a good team," Iguodala said. "They're starting to come in and give us tough games and we're pulling them out."

Iguodala has emerged as the Sixers' best player, but the fifth-year swingman didn't earn his first All-Star appearance even though he's averaging 17.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.7 steals. Him and Cleveland's LeBron James are the only players averaging at least 12.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists.

DiLeo told Iguodala that he should enjoy the break because he's certain to get a nod in future years.

"The biggest thing is becoming a better player and proving your doubters wrong," Iguodala said.

In Philadelphia's last game prior to the break, Iguodala scored 18 points and made the winning basket with 26 seconds left to give the Sixers a 91-87 win over Memphis on Wednesday night.

Iguodala is averaging 23.0 points and 8.5 assists in his last two games versus the Pacers (21-33). Philadelphia leads the season series 2-1.

Iguodala will again be matched up with Indiana's Danny Granger, who earned his first All-Star spot this season. However, his outstanding play hasn't helped the Pacers find any consistency. Indiana has beaten Cleveland, Boston, Orlando and the Los Angeles Lakers but lost to Minnesota, Memphis and Washington.

Granger made two free throws with 0.2 seconds left to give Indiana a 96-95 win over the Cavaliers last Tuesday, but the Pacers fell to Milwaukee 122-110 the following evening.

"We beat Cleveland, but we lose to Milwaukee. We've just got to figure it out," Granger said. "We need to put it behind us."

It was the ninth straight road loss for Indiana, which is in 13th place in the East. The Pacers have lost five of seven overall, but have won two straight and nine of 11 at home.
